Chapter Fourteen

When they got all their bikes moving again in the right direction, they rode across the narrow stretch of land that connected Jamestown Island to the mainland. They came to the large parking lot with the flags out front that they'd seen with Toby and Grace on their first day.

Caitlin pointed at the building. "This is Jamestown Settlement, so that must be the museum."

"I wonder why it's so much bigger than the dig site and the aquarium," said Derek.

"Archaearium, dummy," corrected Sam.

"Right, what did I say?"

"You said aquarium. That's for fish."

"Well, some of the artifacts there could be of fish," said Derek. "Or fish bones. It's an Archaearium Aquarium."

Sam shook his head. "Forget it."

"I think Grace said they've only been digging for the fort for twenty years," said Caitlin. "Maybe this building has been here longer."

"Maybe," said Sam. "Let's go in."

They entered an expansive lobby with a long counter and several ticket-buying windows. Sam puzzled over where they should go, but Derek stepped up to one of ticket windows and smiled at an old lady with gray hair. Her name tag said Jean.

"Hi there, Jean," said Derek with a smile. "How are you today?"

The woman looked up from her computer and smiled back, seeming a bit surprised. "I'm very well. Thank you for asking, young man. How may I help you?"

"We're looking for someone named Jada," said Derek. "Professor Evanshade asked us to meet with her. We're part of the Field School over on the island. Do you know where we can find her?"

Jean eyed them skeptically. "You three are a little young to be part of Field School, aren't you?"

Caitlin stepped up to the counter next to Derek. "We are, but we're old friends of the professor and he invited us to come."

"We're experienced investigators," said Derek confidently.

Sam rolled his eyes. His brother was nothing if not confident.

"Is that right?" said Jean, smiling. "Well then, let me see what I can do about tracking down Jada." She picked up a phone and spoke softly to someone on the other end. A few moments later, she hung up and looked back at them. "Jada is in the middle of a tour right now, but she asked for the three of you to make your way through the museum and she’ll be with you when she's finished." She glanced over her shoulder. "Have you visited the Indian village, the fort, or the ships yet?"

They all shook their heads.

"Well that should keep you busy for a good while," said Jean. "Since you're part of Field School, you can come right in. No charge." She stood and opened a gate beside her window.

"Awesome," said Derek. "Thanks a million, Jean."

She smiled and waved them through. "My pleasure. I'll let Jada know where you are so she can track you down."

"Thanks," said Sam.

"Should we go through the museum first?" asked Caitlin, "Or go straight to the Indian village and the other stuff?"

Derek grinned. "What do you think?" He pushed open the door and charged outside.
